Cardigan_Living_Lab_Experiential_Learning_1Cardigan is fortunate to have our very own living laboratory! Found in the Bronfman science wing, this space is designed to engage our entire community in experiential science. Founded in 2009 by then science teacher, now Gates coach David Auerbach, the Living Lab took shape and invigorated the seventh grade science curriculum. Because of Mr. Auerbach’s hard work, dedication, and vision, Cardigan won a competition that gifted the School over 14 terrariums and aquariums and made everything else possible.

During the past seven years, the Living Lab has been home to a variety of animal species originally from a diverse set of habitats: from desert to ocean and from jungle to forest. It is a fantastic place to observe how these animals eat, sleep, and interact with their environment. As a part of the seventh grade ecology and environmental science curriculum, each student is tasked with becoming a specialist in their animal including how to care for, feed, and handle them.

This year, the Living Lab has been upgraded with a new look. In order to continue extending our learning space outside of classroom walls, the Living Lab has been consolidated into one area and boasts brand new habitats catered to each creature. This consolidation has made way for a new “hands-on science” section. This section currently includes a hyperbolic funnel table in which students can explore the laws of physics. New features stemming from the physical and natural world, like a bicycle generator, will be installed over the course of this year with guaranteed fun and inspiration for everyone. Be sure to come down to Cardigan’s Living Lab soon to see what’s new!
